Don't Forget The Abandoned Lolos & Lolas [A]

Yesterday, I visited Anawim *, a home for the abandoned elderly. I was deeply saddened to have learned that some donors ceased to give to this cause as they would rather give to other charitable institutions, thinking that giving to old people would not be worth it since they will soon die anyway.

I have nothing against giving to orphanages, street children, etc., as these are wonderful places to share our blessings to. It's just that I wish people will not forget the forsaken elderly and I hope we would also help them live out their last years with dignity.

In the seven corporal works of mercy as related by Jesus in a parable (Mark 25:34-40), He said "...feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick...", and it's striking to realize that all these can refer to the neglected lolos and lolas. “Whatever you did to the least of my brethren, you did it to me.”

It is fortunate that Anawim has been blessed by some generous donors who donated for the construction of five houses. These will serve as new shelters because the current homes are already dilapidated. Also, there are a lot of mission-hearted visitors who would go there to give cheer and give in kind (food, medicine, clothing, etc).

However, since Anawim spends a big amount for its monthly operating expense, they are in dire need of cash donations. Regular funds are needed to take care of their day-to-day needs, such as electricity, food, medicine and allowance for the caregivers. So I appeal to your hearts to give whatever amount you can because it matters to them!

If you wish to donate to the abandoned lolos & lolas of Anawim,
you may do so by clicking this link: www.anawim.com.ph

Meet one of the lolas: LOLA VALENTINA AGOSTO

Every time there are visitors in Anawim, she always wants to entertain them by singing. She has such a happy disposition--despite being blind.

Lola Valentina could vividly recall when she arrived in Anawim. It was a rainy day of July 1, 2003. She was brought there by the son of her former employer where she worked as a domestic helper for almost 42 years.

She didn’t want to go to a home for the abandoned elderly in Montalban. But her employer had no choice since Lola Valentina has no family of her own. She has never married and she has not been back to her hometown in Leyte for all these years in Manila.

She lived a sad life because she was never paid for her services. She was only given free shelter and food. Then when she grew old and her eyesight failed, she felt the family she cared for abandoned her because they had no need of her.

But her hopelessness turned into something beautiful in Anawim. She now has a home to call her own and for the first time, people are caring for her needs. She has even become closer to God. Despite her disability, she’s independent. She would eat and walk by herself. And since she has a lot to be thankful for, she can’t help but sing and even dance!

Lola Valentina is just one of the 58 abandoned elderly housed in Anawim. God loves each one of them. I applaud the caregivers and staff who tirelessly serve them there. Caloy (Center Director), Myrna (Administrative Head), Precy, Mila, Gloria, my parents, Ben and Babes Zambrano, are some of the unsung heroes of Anawim. They are God’s extended arms to these abandoned ones so that God can show them that they are valuable in His eyes.

So I hope you could pay a visit to these lolos and lolas. In their twilight years, give a sunshine of blessing to them.

~Anne~

* Anawim Lay Missions is a foundation by Bro.Bo Sanchez which serves as a home for abandoned elderly and is located in a farm in Montalban, Rizal. It is also a home for physically and mentally handicapped persons as well as orphans.

15 Things I Learned From Our First Two Days In Greece [T]

1. Inflatable Neck Pillows (one per traveler) are a MUST for any plane trip more than two hours

2. Airport benches are terrible places to sleep on to pass the time between plane arrival to inter-city train opening hours (my back & neck were tortured for four hours!)

3. "It's all Greek to me" takes on a new meaning as Greek words are indiscernible! Where'd the alphabet go?

4. EVERYTHING came from Greece! Our words, terms, civilization, philosophies, designs, and even my mom! Yup, she claims she was born here from another life (kaya pala greek god ako...)

5. Every Greek dessert is diabetically challenging (TOO SWEET)! It's sweet as it is, plus swimming in syrup, multiplied by sprinkled sugar toppings.

6. Greek Coffee has sand in it. Yum!

7. It's cool paying for stuff using coins (though the fun lasts until you begin multiplying the amount by 60)

8. DSLR's provide better shots than point&shoot cameras, though photos taken make us seem lonely--hard to catch the two of us in the picture through the holding-cam-facing-you-on-a-raised-arm style for regular digicams. Hambigat!

9. Greeks (and other Europeans) are mostly courteous drivers, even to pedestrians! (parinig parinig)

10. The Trojan War DID happen, although not due to the Helen of Troy abduction story. Our tour guide Anthony mentioned it happened due to economic reasons. I like the Brad Pitt version better.

11. I have yet to see a Greek that looks like Brad Pitt.

12. It's great having our own language. How else can we secretly talk about other people with us on tour? (Hey they do the same as well! Hehe)

13. No one here knows what "Shazam!" means! ImazhineDat. Oh well, time to teach the Ancient World something new...

14. GREEKS are not fans of a show GREE, as GLEEKS are to GLEE (...ngwek ngwek ngweeekk!...)

15. I REALLY, REALLY NEED TO HIT THE GYM TO BURN THE TOUR CALORIES AS SOON AS I RETURN HOME (we Olympians have a reputation to keep, y'know)

I'm waiting on You, Lord

And I am hopeful,

I'm waiting on You, Lord

Though it is painful,
But patiently, I will wait I will move ahead,

bold and confident,

Taking every step
in obedience While I'm waiting,

I will serve You

While I'm waiting,

I will worship

While I'm waiting,

I will not faint

I'll be running the race,
Even while I wait
I will serve You while I'm waiting,
I will worship while I'm waiting

Pre-Travel Jitters! [A]

As of this writing, it's already the first week of April...crunch time! Come May, the Wubs are going to embark on another adventure in three Mediterranean countries: Greece, Turkey and Italy.

What a blessing! It was only two years ago that we were equally blessed to tour Europe and I thought that it was just a once in a lifetime opportunity. Then here comes Greece...Opa!

This May 2010, we are blessed to be going to Greece for Toh to attend his company's International Sales Conference. And after, we are invited to go to Turkey with his boss (and his wife). Then we decided to go to Italy as well, specifically the Tuscany area where we failed to go to last time we went to Europe in 2008.

For most travelers going abroad, the journey begins when one embarks on a plane. But for me, it starts with a lot of planning and research especially when we (together with the hubby) go to a new place/country for tour.

When did I start planning for our trip? Only way back in February. First, we plotted the countries and places where we want to go to then I started searching for the hotels (mind you, countless hotels). Why go through the hassle of searching online when we could opt for a travel agency? First, because we want to limit our budget. Second, we don't like the hustle and bustle of group tours (translation: waking up so early and touring one place to another like you're in Amazing Race). Lastly, there's more adventure in discovering a place by yourself (translation: lots of online research).

Now, about online research. What I do is look for the hotels that fits our budget with the amenities we like such as air-conditioned room, personal toilet&bath, free wifi (although not all), safety box. Then after coming up with a list, I have to check the reviews because you shouldn't believe in everything that is written on the website. Trip Advisor is my most reliable review site. I actually find a lot of interesting and laughable remarks from different nationalities of their definition of comfort and security in traveling. But that's another topic. Next research are the tours, where can we go where it is practical to go on our own and where is it better to take the local tours instead.

But what's most challenging at this leg of the race (oops, too much watching of the Amazing Race) is the ferry connection from Turkey to Greece to Italy. It's hard to find the timetable and the right port. The hotels where were booked at would refer us back to the "unreliable" ferry websites.

At this point, how I wish there's an online one-stop shop service provider of your travel needs and queries. A travel agent? Nah! An online travel advisor. Mhmm, business opportunity? ;-)

Aaargh, few weeks to go and still more to research to finalize our itinerary. As for our targeted budget, we're still halfway there. As Wub would say it, it's miracle time! We await for financial blessings to shower upon us. Now, that's part of the adventure!

Okay, back to research. Anne, calm down, no need to hit the panic button.

Let the WubBlogging Begin! [T]

It has been two years since we put up this site, but we never really got down to sharing our experiences... until today! In the advent of our upcoming euro trip, Anne & I decided to revive this blog and take you along with us for our life journeys! Welcome to WubBlogs!

Allow us to share our thoughts on life, love & laughter; anecdotes on our cruises, community & craziness; lessons on fitness, food & faith; all narrated in the fun & wacky way that the Wubs are known for. Time to flex the dormant part of our brains reserved for writing and begin the voyage!

As a little backgrounder, Anne used to work for Shepherd's Voice Publications as a Writer/Editorial Assistant & was a regular contributor to the organization's magazines like Kerygma, Didache, Rock Solid Youth, etc. I also used to contribute to these mags, and had a regular advice column at Rock Solid Youth during its heyday. I do technical writing in my work as an engineer since my job involves marketing, sales, business development & project management. The funny thing was even before getting married, Anne & I actually dreamt of writing a book together! So who knows, maybe this will be the venue to begin it!

Expect a "He-Said, She-Said" type of writing style. Anne's Blogs will have an [A] on the title, while mine will have a [T]. The true kulitan begins with blogs with [W] (for us Wubs) since we'll be co-writing those articles--which actually means we'll be peering over each other's shoulders & edit, re-edit, then post-edit each others' entries before uploading!

Let the WubBlogging begin! See you in our next WubBlog!
